The droning of the jet engines and the darkness in the rear of the aircraft made Tynan sleepy. He looked at the men with him, saw that the old timers, Hatcher and Blanchard, were already asleep. The youngsters were too wired to sleep. They were sitting together, talking at each other, apparently not listening to one another.
But the surprise on the flight was Carter. Tynan had expected to leave her back at the base reading the latest intell and filling in the flight crews that were processing through on their way to Florida, Cuba and then Grande Terre. But Owens had appeared, told Tynan that she would be going with them and then bounced on out.
She’d seemed happy about the situation. Now he expected to ditch her in Cuba. With all the traffic scheduled in and out, he figured she’d just catch a ride on back. Through his squinted eyes, he watched her as she read through the documents she had brought with them. A briefcase full of the latest on the situation on Grande Terre, the unclassified materials they had found, and the maps. She was preparing herself for the upcoming mission.
Tynan got out of his seat and moved over to where she sat. There weren’t many seats on the plane. Most of the space was taken up with equipment and supplies for the Marines at Guantanamo. The equipment and supplies were strapped to pallets fastened to the floor and jammed into the rear of the aircraft. But it left him room to maneuver and he had the deck space to kneel in front of her.
“Got anything interesting?”
Carter glanced at him and shook her head. “The situation seems to have remained stable since the last updates. Reports of some rioting but nothing else.”
Tynan nodded and held out his hand. She gave him a number of the documents. Flimsy things on a paper that felt slippery and smelled of mimeograph ink. He read through them quickly.
“With luck,” he said, “we’re in and out. Find the students and lead them to the beach.”
“Have you thought about that yet?” she asked.
Tynan stood and took the seat next to her. He leaned close and over the roar of the jet engines said, “Some. If we’re lucky, the students will all be congregated in one of the largest areas, a student union, auditorium or gym. We won’t have to search the campus for them.”
“And if they’re not?”
“Once we find a couple of them and identify ourselves, we’ll have their help in finding the others. It’s not like they’ll be hiding from us.”
Carter nodded and then said, “But you have to remember that this is not normal times. They’ll have seen the Cubans landing and they’ll have heard the shooting in the streets. They may be hiding, if not from us, then from the Cubans.”
“Even so,” said Tynan, “it’s not that difficult a task. And once we’ve located one or two, they’ll be able to help us find the rest.”
“I suppose,” she said.
“One thing,” said Tynan.
